Suggest Treatment For Conjunctivitis Despite Taking Polymyxin B Sulfate
Question: 20 year old college daughter has conjunctivitis and was given Polymyxin B Sulfate and Trimethoprim Ophthalmic Solution with the directions of 1- drop in each eye Q 3 hours. She says the redness is gone but not the eye exudate. Could this be viral conjunctivitis? Or should she go back to Urgent Care for something different?

I am sorry to hear that your daughter is suffering from conjunctivitis. She has been appropriately treated with topical antibiotics for the infection. the redness has stopped but the discharge continues. this is not uncommon with conjunctivitis. I would recommend that she continue with the eye drops until the discharge stops. There is no way to tell if her pink eye is from bacteria or viral causes. Therefore, we usually treat all eye infections as bacterial.
The only other cause of your redness and discharge could be allergic conjunctivitis. For this we usually use a antihistamine orally to reduce the discomfort. She can try claritin or allegra.
For any of thee conditions she should be using a warm washcloth to help sooth the eye and help clear the drainage.
I do not think going back to the urgent care is going to be any benefit to her
In summary
1. bacterial or viral conjunctivitis no change in treatment
2. Finish eye drops till drainage stops
3. Add allegra or claritin is allergies suspected
4. Warm wash clothes to sooth the eye and aid in removing drainage
