Question: Hi Rynne,
i suffer from Chronis Migraines. I had a headinjury 9 years ago and in time my mild head aches developed in to Migrains. Ihave been a variety of pain killer from starting with Demerol injections to table form, then to Morphine, to Hydromorphone contin and dilaudid then to Morphine and methedone and now back to Hydromorphone and dilaudid. the strength is 24 mg contin and 8 mg dilaudid. I have been over a year with not seeing a pain specalist until last Friday where after 2 hours of history his thinking is to get me off the Hydromorohne as it is not strong enough right now to put me on a addiction medication but nothing for my pain. what do I have to do to get this doctor to look at my severe pain and not addiction i am addicted as it has been over 9 years.
can you assist me in recommending an alternative to what i am on now to something else.
thanksa for your XXXXXXX XXXXXXX Manning

Brief Answer:
Pain control for migraine

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns

You have intractable migraines and it is not being controlled with opiate medication and your doctor is considering stopping your opiates. Other options for migraine control are the anti seizure medications like gabapentin, lyrica or topamax. These medication stabilize nerve endings and can reduce the frequency and severity of migraines

Also hypertension medications have also be tried to reduce migraines, Propranolol, metoprolol and lisinopril. They work by stabilizing the arteries around the brain from going into spasms and causing pain.

For something completely out of the box is possible use of medical marijuana. We are not sure how it works but it may help over all improve your pain control and reduce the frequency of migraines.

In summary
1. Antiseixure medications Topamax gabapentin or lyrica
2. hypertensive medications propranolol, metoprolol or lisinopril
3. Medical Marijuana
