Suggest Treatment For Chest Pain While On Ranitidine And Sucralfate

Posted on Mon, 20 Oct 2014
Question: i was diagnosed with inflammation of esophagus 2 months ago. Had EDG done. They put me on omeprazole and ranitidine 300mg. after a month, they had to take me off omeprazole because of my borderline osteoporosis. I am now on sucralfate and the ranitidine. I am still getting chest pain on right side as well as in back. EKG was fine. I made lifestyle changes. why is it taking so long for the chest pain to go away? It started with the chest pain that is why I had EDG done. Also, are the meds ranitidine and sucralfate good for this since i cant take ppi? thank you

Brief Answer:
Considerations

Detailed Answer:
thanks for sending your question.

Regarding the proton pump inhibitor I don't think that that triggered osteoporosis within two months. There are many treatments for osteoporosis during which you could still receive the proton pump inhibitor in my opinion. If your doctor thinks otherwise please ask him to explain that to you.

The Carafate and ranitidine are fine to take over a long-term but you do need some type of surveillance.also I would expect that your doctor tested you for helicobacter pylori which is a bacteria that can cause persistent inflammation and ulceration in the stomach.

if you have osteoporosis I expect that your doctors have talk to you about medications which can be used to increase bone density.

Thanks again for sending your question. I would continue the current medication regimen for now and would probably consider a repeat and DOS could be at some point in the next six months. If this continues to be a problem you might need to talk to a surgeon about possible surgical procedures which can be done to help alleviate symptoms of acid reflux.

Sincerely,

Dr. Galamaga
