Question: My big toes have sores on the outside. Calluses that rub and get sore when I walk in my hiking boots and sandals. I am walking 3_5 miles and training for the Portuguese Camino in August. Maybe my boots are too small? Please help with some suggestion. Thanks XXXX

Brief Answer:
Costant friction is the cause with tight shoes

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for posting
I really appreciate your passion for sport. These callus formations commonly occur at site of constant friction in our body. So, if that cause is removed then in most cases callus does go away. The pressure causes the skin to die and form a hard, protective surface knows as callus. All callus formation does not need treatment unless they cause pain.
My suggestion for you would be-
1. Wear shoes that fit well and are roomy, with wide and deep toe boxes (the area that surrounds the toes).
2. To reduce the size of callus you may soak the foot in warm water or may apply salicylic acid to be followed by rubbing with a pumis stone. A word of caution salicylic acid needs to be applied at the callus only not at the normal healthy surrounding skin.
3. You may use protective padding like moleskin/toe cap and toe sleeve.
4.Never cut the callus yourself, especially if you have diabetes or other conditions that cause circulatory problems or numbness.
I need to see your foot to rule out any structural abnormality leading to callus formation. So, if possible you may send the picture of your foot in the follow up query.

Hope this information suffices.
Take care and I shall be glad to answer any further query.
