Posted on Fri, 16 Dec 2016
Question: About 1 1/2 wks ago I went to eye doctor for burning, itchy eyes and feeling of pressure. Doctor said I had swelling in and behind the eye and gave me steroid drops to reduce swelling. It seemed to help but then about 4 days ago my gland on the left side swelled and became so soar I could not sleep on that side. it has continued to worsen and today the swelling, burning and pressure has returned in my eyes as well as pressure and tenderness in my left ear. Don't know if I should wait it out or be concerned.

Brief Answer:
Allergy or viral infection are probable but some more info is needed

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for asking at HCM.
I carefully read your question and I understand your concern.

There are a few causes that can cause similar symptoms with the ones you're having.

I would like to know-
1. if you have intolerance to light- does your eye hurt if you see in light or you need to avoid light ?

2. Where is the gland that is swollen, is it around the eye or in the neck or in front of the ear of somewhere else ?

3. do you have secretions from that eye ?

4. Do you have any lesion on the skin of the face, any redness or crusts or vesicles ?

5. You do not sound to have pain in the eye... but heaviness and burning and pressure- is that correct ?

6. How is your vision- any changes lately ?
The above information would give us more information to decide further about this....

I would say that:

A) If you do not have pain in the eye, no vision changes, no secretions, no skin lesions than we can say that both ear and eye problems might be caused by a viral infection or seasonal allergy that is affecting both. In each case some anithistamines like Tab Cetirizine 10mg might be a help, nasal lavage few times a day with saline solution and steroid nasal drops or spray also.

B) please avoid steroid eye drops as they might cause a lot of serious complications in the eye- there are other helpful medications that can be used instead.

C) If you have any of the complaint I mentioned above you will need to let a doctor know. Anything that causes pain in the eye or affects the vision (especially not being able to tolerate light in that eye) is important and needs to be evaluated accordingly.

Hope this is helpful and will answer to your question. Please feel free to contact me back if anymore clarifications are needed. In that case a picture of your eye and face might be very helpful. You can upload/attach it at the reports section
