Suggest Treatment For Blood In Sputum And Sore Throat While Having Bulimia

default
Posted on Wed, 29 Jun 2016
Question: I am trying to break my bulimia pattern. I did very well with no purging for a week and then last night i purged again. This morning when I woke up and brushed my teeth there was quite a bit of bright red blood in the sink when I spit. I checked my gums and it didn't seem to be coming from them. My throat is a little sore, but only on the left side. I have seen blood in my vomit in the past during purging and that it was pushed me to try and stop. I am worried that I have ruptured my esophagus or something. Other than the irritated throat I do not seem to be feeling bad at all. More worried than anything.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
Welcome.
I have gone through your query and do understand your concern.
Purging result in the injury to esophagus, throat. Blood vessels get damaged and blood can be from this area. Most of them stop on own without causing any serious trouble but mild pain and burning sensation.
I suggest you to avoid solid and spicy foods for another two days till the tear gets healed so as to prevent rebleed.
Avoid purging, alcohol and smoking if any. Drink cold water it will cause vasoconstriction and prevent bleeding.
You can take capsule omeprazole 20 mg once daily for 5 days, it will prevent acidity and further irritation to esophagus.
Apart from this we have to rule out any bleeding from dental problems.
In a nutshell I can say that it is nothing to worry, presently based on the information provided by you.

If you see another episode of bleed then there would be need for endoscopy, this would be one to evaluate the problem in detail and treat accordingly.

Hope this helps.
Take care.
