Posted on Mon, 8 Jun 2015
Question: On may the 10th am my boyfriend and I were having sex and I was on top. We must have missed because he hit hard said felt a pop and no pain yet an extreme amount of blood from his penis. We went to the ER. They did a urinalysis and a physical exam said no penile fracture to rest and take antibiotics. He has been has some black and blue he says all looks normal and no swelling. Yet he experiences blood every night from his penis. We have not had relations and he has not masturbated. Why would this occur about for how long and is his bleeding considered normal for an abnormal situation or is it of concern? He is urinating normally with no noticeable blood.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.

Welcome to HealthcareMagic.

Major problems like fracture has been excluded from the examination at ER.
The blood can be related with a minor injury of urethra .Usually bleeding following a minor trauma ,can last for several days depending on the severity of the injury but since it has been 1 week since the incident and he has abstained from intercourse and masturbation ,the bleeding should have stopped.
I would suggest to give it few more days and if the bleeding continues ,he need to consult a physician. The examination of urethra via urethroscopy is necessary to evaluate the urethra and search for any injury that can be the source of the bleeding.A ultrasound of penis might necessary too.
If the bleeding doesn't stop ,the cause might be a broken blood vessel in the urethra that might require treatment.

Hope it helps.
Let me know if you have any question.

He did awake this am without blood for the first time in one week. Good sign I assume? He did have bruising below the penile head is that consistent with your above conclusion? Are there any usual long term effects of that type of injury? What should he continue to watch for?

Hello.

The bleeding and the bruise are both signs of an minor injury on penis.Since penis fracture has been excluded ,this minor injury will resolve on it's own for 1-2 weeks. There is no long-term effect of this.
You don't need to worry. The fact that he didn't have any bleeding today is a good sign.
I would suggest to wait few more days to have intercourse ,just to be safe.If he doesn't have any bloody discharge form penis, doesn't have pain and the urination seems normal ,he has nothing to worry about.

Take care.
