Suggest Treatment For Bladder Cancer In A 90 Year Old

default
Posted on Wed, 23 Sep 2015
Question: My 90 yr old father was diagnosed with Stage 11 bladder cancer. Dr. feels it is too risky to ignore it, but also feels too risky to operate. He is suggesting chemo and radiation. Realistically does that make sense.

Brief Answer:
Maybe surgery is not the best option now!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I understand the challenges you have with this diagnosis and the treatment options. It becomes very tricky and though surgery is always the preferred treatment for cancer that can be resected, the patients health has a lot to play in the making of that decision. If the doctors think he cannot support extensive cancer surgery, I will say go with that. remember doctor always love to operate and whenever they hesitate, there is a genuine reason to be concerned. Surgery can kill your father in a shorter while while cancer itself might take longer. Also, a successful cancer surgery may help your dad for a longer time period. However, it is about weighing the risk and potential benefits and making smart calls. I think we should hold up and not do this surgery at this time.

I hope this helps. I wish your dad well. Thanks for using our services and let me know if there is more you would like us to talk to at this time.
