default
Posted on Wed, 7 Oct 2015
Question: I drink a lot during the day but don't urinate much.I have OCD and my obession is urinating. So I try to to urinate ABoUT EVERY HOUR. most of the time I don't feel the urge but try to make my self go anyway. If I don't go much i panic. Then in the evening I start urinating a lot about every 1 1/2 hour\s. My question is why can't I go much in the day time. I guess I just can't wait for the urge . I massage my bladder to make myself go. I have had bladder scans and have no retention. My DR gave me a some catheters to self catherize myself. but I have not needed to do that yet. When I really need to go I have no trouble passing urine. This is making my life hell!

Brief Answer:
OCD is a treatable disease

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question.

It is clear that your have OCD with a serious symptom of compulsions to urinate. The fact is that your body is not urinating every hour during the day because this is not the way the body works. Drinking water with the purpose of urinating can cause electrolyte imbalances that can be dangerous and even deadly. I certainly would not catheterize yourself, as this can introduce infections that can seriously harm you. What you need to do is seek treatment for OCD.

OCD is a treatable disease. High-dose SSRIs, such as Prozac or Luvox, are often effective. Psychotherapy is also crucial, particularly CBT and exposure therapy. I strongly recommend you work with your psychiatrist on these issues rather than focusing on ways to force yourself to urinate, which can have dangerous complications.

Detailed Answer:
If you are urinating clear urine, you are drinking too much water. This is the best measure about how much is safe to drink.

Pressing on your bladder is likely not harmful but it is certainly not necessary.

Gatorade is not an adequate substitute.

Detailed Answer:
This is not the right approach to take for your health. You are focused on making your body urinate when the body is not equipped to work that way. It will not work. You must focus on getting your OCD under control, and then your concerns about urination will go away. Talk to a psychiatrist about these concerns, or if you want, we can work on this in more detail in private via the link below.
