Suggest Treatment After Seizure While Sleeping

default
Posted on Mon, 12 Oct 2015
Question: I had a seizure in my sleep last week and was in the hospital for four days. They discovered my heart rate drops down to upper 30's and oxygen saturation drops to 72% while sleeping. They had oxygen delivered at home to use while I am sleeping while I wait for my sleep study to be done. Last night I would wake up every few minutes trembling and shaking with seizure like symptoms. What can I do to sleep? Is it possible to have seizures during sleep that occur that often?

Detailed Answer:
Hi xxxx.
Thanks for being on healthcaremagic.com.
I am Dr.Ajay Panwar,a neurologist,here to answer your query.

Yes,that's quite possible. In fact, that's usual in the clinical practice. This is because sleep is a well studied and well documented, provocative factor for seizures. We even use it as a provocative maneuver while doing an EEG(Electroencephalogram) of a patient with seizures.

At this point, you should get the following investigations done-
1)MRI Brain with Epilepsy protocol
2)EEG

Also,as the clinical possibility of seizure is very strong, empirical antiepileptic drugs should be started. Many patients achieve an excellent response with just a single antiepileptic drug and remain seizure free on drug.

If you have any further questions,I shall be glad to have you in follow-up.
