default
Posted on Thu, 8 Oct 2015
Question: Since last 3-5 days, I don't know whats happening to me. I am getting several heartburn whenever I am taking meals. I am taking dygene to reduce the heartburn but its coming back again whenever I am taking any kinda be it a small packet of buscuit, or rice or even spicy foods. (I am addicted to rich and spicy foods, most of the time I order food from restaurant)... I haven't consulted any doctor yet for this problem as it's been happening since last couple of days only. But now, it concerns me a bit as I read on the internet as it might be a symptom of gall stone.... Can you throw some light on my condition and suggest me some medication pls which can help me to get rid of frequent heartburns????

Also, I would like to make you aware that I am having Asthma as my pre-existing disease and taking inhaler for the same (LEVOLIN and SEROFLO 250) and I am a coke (caffeine) addict as well... I can't live without it not even a single day... I drink approx 1.2 ltrs everyday. So, I just wanna know does it have any connection with the problem I am facing and also does regular intake of caffeine will give me any side effects in future???

Brief Answer:
Features are suggestive of acidity related stomach problem

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXX, Hi
Welcome to HCM.
I can understand your concern.
I went through your problem for the last 3-5 days.

I am of the opinion that you have developed acidity related inflammation of the stomach (gastritis) apparently caused by high intake of caffeine (coke), hot n spicy foods from the restaurants.

The regular high intake of coffee, alcohol, cigarette smoking, stress, hot and spicy foods are some of the important causative factors for the acidity related gastritis or peptic ulcer.

The use of Levolin & Seriflo inhalers are not associated with your present problem.

Digene is an antacid which is effective for immediate relief of pain due to acidity, however its action is very short and hence not effective in gastritis.

I would advise you to take a combination of medicines Pantoprazole & Domperidone one hour before breakfast once daily for at least 4-6 weeks duration. This combination will not only reduce the pain but also promote the healing the damage caused by the acid on the stomach lining.

The abdominal pain due to gall stones is usually confined to the right upper quadrant associated with nausea and vomiting and aggravated by fatty meals.

Beside the medications suggested above, the following precautions are recommended:

1. Avoid alcohol (if you are taking it), smoking, coffee, hot n spicy foods
2. Eat home cooked foods with less oil, more fruits and vegetables are good for your health
3. Take curd or yoghurt at dinner
4. Do regular exercise
5. An abdominal ultrasound scan to rule out gall stones
6. Do not sleep immediately after having food, sleep after 2-3 hrs.

Hope the suggestions given above could be of great help to you in getting rid of the heart burn.

I am not facing any kinda pain or discomfort apart from heartburn so do i really need an ultrasound??? And also from today onwards, I started taking PAN 40? Is there any other medication that I should take? My condition is getting a bit worse, I guess. Today, I woke up in the morning and took a glass of Horlicks Lite even without any food but that even gave me a heartburn within 20 mins and I had to take dygene to relieve the symptom????

Brief Answer:
Along with Pan 40 you should take Domperidone 10

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXX,

Thanks for your reply.

U would suggest to take PAN 40 combined with Domperidone 10 on empty stomach one hour before breakfast, this will suppress the stomach acid production also prevent the heartburn.
If you do not have abdominal pain or discomfort there is no need for an ultrasound.

Hope I could answer your query.
Regards
