Brief Answer:
Take pain killer medications and consult doctor if required

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX broadfoot ,
I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.
Pain in occipital region may be due to cervical spondylosis or migraine or some traumatic cause.
As there is no history of trauma the cause may be due to cervical spondylosis or migraine.
For how long the pain present?
Any fever, vomiting, nausea, motor, sensory loss, bladder bowel involvement?
Any previous such episodes, duration, associated aggravating or relieving factors?
If the symptoms are of short duration and no other symptoms present then you can take pain killers for few days .
But if you have any other symptoms then visiting a doctor for examination and advice will be a good step.
Hope you found the answer helpful.
