Posted on Sat, 24 Jan 2015
Question: I was diagnosed with conjunctivitis a little over a week ago. Given erythromycin ointment. That was difficult to apply and didnt do much. I went back and the doctor prescribed polymyxin. Ive used it for one day. I woke up this morning with a crusty feeling on one of my eyes for the first time. Could this medicine be making it worse? When should i start to see improvement?

Thank you for responding, Doctor. He told me to stop using the erythromycin and only use the polymyxin and he prescribed me an allergy medication like Allegra. This will resolve it? I shouldnt be concerned about the crusty feeling i had this morning in one eye?

Brief Answer:
Treatment is right, no need to worry.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thank you for the follow up question.

Antiallergy medication like Allegra will provide symptomatic relief and will be helpful in your condition.
I feel you need to continue both Erythromycin and Polymxin as both cover different organisms and both can be used together.

Polymyxin is best used during day time and Erythromycin during night before you sleep.

Hope this is helpful to you.

Brief Answer:
Yes it is healing.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thank you for the follow up question.

The photo is showing conjunctival congestion in the form of redness of eyes.
The redness is last symptom to disappear.
There is no watering, crusting or discharge, hence conjunctivitis is resolving. You need to continue same treatment and the condition should heal in another 3-4 days.
