Hello, XXXXXXX,
There are a number of reasons for excess gas in the intestine.
One of the main sources is the swallowed air, everytime we eat
or drink. If a person eats in a hurried manner, he can swallow
more air. Drinking during meals also adds to the gas.
Drinking carbonated beverages produces more gas.
The next source of gas is the digestive process and fermentation.
Starches ,legumes like beans, vegetables like cabbage, cauliflower,
brussel sprouts, garlic can produce more gas. If a person has
lactose intolerance, can have more gas. If you have not been
tested for this, a simple breath test will detect this.
You can try to avoid all dairy products (Any thing that has lactose)
for a couple of weeks and see if the condition improves.
You can switch to soy milk or almond milk which does not have
lactose.
If you have malabsorption problem from intestinal diseases
you cannot digest fat, carbohydrates or proteins. If the pancreas
is not functioning properly , this causes malabsorption.
Celiac disease is another condition that can cause malabsorption.
I recommend a small bowel x-ray series along with a sonogram
of the abdomen or a CT-Scan to look at the pancreas. Blood tests
to rule out celiac and tests for pancreas can be done.
Peppermint oil might help reduce gas. There are capsules which
you can take three times a day with meals. Over the counter
drugs like Gas-X or Phazyme may help a little. There is a product
called Beano which helps with legumes to reduce gas.
Charcoal capsules are the best and help adsorb the gas. Only
problem is , your stool can turn black.
These are some of my thoughts and suggestions and you can discuss
with your own doctor.
I wish you the very best.
