Should I Worry About Burping Reflex A Year After Nissen Fundoplication And Hiatal Hernia Repair?

Question: hello Doctor
I have questions about nissen fundoplication and hiatal hernia repair; which I did have one year and 4 months ago. It has been wonderful and I have not taking any medication since the surgery.

I did understand all the side effects so they dont XXXXXXX me; bloating and unable to belch. I use simeticon when its nessecary.

But my question is; the body still dont understand and never will that I have had surgery; so the stomach still thinks it can burp; and sometimes I have urge to burp, while eating and after. Sometimes I can just swallow a few times and then its gone; but sometimes I just need to let it go and then the stomach makes this burping movement(reflex) and nothing comes; like it hit a blocking wall.; and sometimes it can be a little scary(uncomfortable); thinking about if the wrap will break.

Can you tell me this; is the wrap strong enough to keep burp backs long term, or should I be careful about burping reflex. Because sometimes it impossible to control.
Or do I not need to worry at all ?
or maybe the burping reflex makes the wrap even stronger ?

best regards XXXX

Brief Answer:
You need not to worry at all after 2 months of successful surgery.
Lastly you can't control any reflux so anxiety would only increase your problems.
You are fine now so dont worry at all.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Have gone through your details and i appreciate your concerns,
But what i feel is that you are getting over conscious about your problem.
Burping belching etc are a part of normal physiology of body and any surgery involves use of suture strong enough to keep things at place for years.
One and a half year post fundoplication you could lead life of your choice. These extreme precautions are to be followed for few weeks after surgery.
So don't worry too much.Don't get over obsessesed.
Well as per your query burping etc all are refluxes that are controlled by your autonomous nerves or spinal cord.Stomach itself does not have a brain that would guide it not to try to burp as a surgery has been performed.Basically surgery and medicines is something against nature or for what human has not been designed. If there is a problem that is due to some physiological error in our body so philosophically by performing surgery we are going against something which your brain would never adapt for or in short doing something against natural physiology of your body.
Enjoy your life and stay happy.
Good luck.

thank you.

One more tip from you, as this is my last question:)

I take care of my bloating pretty well and try to eat only healthy food; and eating slowly so I dont get bloated. So I think this is pretty good, thinking of that I cant burp.

But once in a while I get bloated and if it hurts I can take simeticon that works immediately for me.
But sometimes I find taking a really hot shower very helpful and the stomach start releasing gas immediately after shower and this has helped me a lot as a natural remedy.

Do you think hot shower is a good idea if it works? and why do it work ?

do you have any good tips to relief bloating fast when it happens ?

best regards XXXX

Brief Answer:
follow up.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again my dear patient,
You can ask as many query you want,I would be very happy in providing you with any professional advice anytime,

1)I take care of my bloating pretty well and try to eat only healthy food; and eating slowly so I dont get bloated. So I think this is pretty good, thinking of that I cant burp-As a secondary consultant sir i would suggest you to eat clean 90% of time but taking a cheat meal once a week or 15 days would keep you more happy and satisfied.
One to two cheat meals could be taken.

2)Do you think hot shower is a good idea if it works? and why do it work ?-Any thing which works for a patient is always a good idea.Likely scientific explaination could be when ever you bloat a large amount of toxic gases are released as a result of incomplete fermentation of food. These gases starts compressing the intestine and nerves passing through intestines causing pain. When you take hot shower the temperature of body rises which causes the gas to expand and become light hence gas starts to rise up and expels through burps. This is a explaination given on basis of physics its not a medical thing.

Take 40 mg tablet of omeprazole and activated charcoal when ever you feel excessively bloated. Both are Over the counter.

Regards.
