Posted on Fri, 5 Jul 2019
Question: My 3 year old son has had diarrhea since XXXXXXX 10 and threw up a couple times on thursday and once on friday. We switched him to a bland diet and today he had one episode at 8AM but nothing since then and it is 7PM now. Does it seem like he is on the mend? We are giving him chicken, waffles, potatoes and yogurt etc... and he is drinking normally. No blood in his stool and no fever. Should I be overly worried or am I worrying for nothing?

Brief Answer:
He is getting better, nothing to worry about.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, welcome to Ask a doctor service.
I read your query and here is my advice.

I think he is recovering. Sometimes the acute diarrhoea can last even two weeks.
Having one episode in about 12 hours is nothing to worry about.
Eating white tested bread, more yoghurt, less fruits and vegetables, less fibers can help him.
Also if you give him probiotics such enterogermina can help him reestablish intestinal flora.

Hope I have answered the question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank You for the reply. He went to bed without any more diarrhea today. Is it normal for the stool to stay loose for a while while he is getting better?

Brief Answer:
If no fever and blood there is no problem.

Detailed Answer:
The mucus in stools may be present in gastrointestinal infection and if there is no blood and fever there is nothing to worry about.
Possibly the mucus shows the healing if the mucosal lining.
Just keep him hydrated have lots of fluids and water.
You can also use simethicone for him.

ok. we did a follow up at his doctor today. He has not had a loose stool since 8 AM this morning and he just went to sleep without having any all day. His doctor said his test results show no eColi or salmonella. At this point she still believes it is an infection of some sort. She also felt his belly and said she did not feel any lumps and his bowels were making normal sounds. I asked her if it could be something serious like cancer and she said No thats why she felt his abdomen for any abnormalities and all felt normal.
