My 2.8 Year Old Daughter Had Fever , Runny Nose
Question: My 2.8 year old daughter had fever, runny nose and cold 10 days back and we took her to paediatrician and the doctor gave Alerid 5ml once daily at night for 7 to 10 days, Calpol 5ml only when fever is above 100*F and nasal drops. She recovered from fever very next day itself but cold is still there. We have given Alerid for 7 days and then stopped. Today she started coughing from morning and it is more at night while she is sleeping. We have again given her Alerid 5ml again at night.
Kindly advise if she need any other medication for the cold and cough.
Also, she seems to have worms in her stomach and shows symptoms of itchiness near her anus. There are small white germs coming out as well. Her last deworming done in first week of October, 2018 and it is not 6 months yet. Please advise if we can give her Zentel 10ml suspension again?

Brief Answer:
Possibly a viral infection.

Thanks for using the Ask a Doctor service.
I have gone carefully through the details and understand your concern. Most often such episodes are due to some viral infections and usually they have an allergic component associated. Irrespective of treatment it usually spontaneously resolves in 5-7 days. Treatment is supportive and usually comprises of antiallergic medication like Alerid, and saline nasal drops for blocked nose.
You need to give steam inhalation to your child. It helps in reducing the congestion and thereby the cough. Just sit with the child on your lap and place the source of steam before you. The water vapor will be in the air and automatically the child will breathe it in. Water vapor will reach deep inside and would help in diluting the cough and thus would provide relief.
If your child is otherwise active and playful, I would not be concerned. If not, it would be a good idea to visit a doctor and to get the child evaluated. If the respiratory rate is greater than or equal to 50 breaths/min you would need to take her to a doctor for the possibility of underlying pneumonia. If the rate is lesser, you need not worry.
You can feel free to give Zentel again for deworming. No problems with that.
I hope that I could clear your doubts. Usually the symptoms resolve in a week or so.
Feel free to write back.

Sure. We have given her the medicine today.
One of my friend told that they have given Zental 10ml and repeated the 10ml again after 2 weeks as per their doctor’s advise to complete deworm their daughter and she is almost of same age as my daughter. Is it advised to do so?
