Is Tongue Twitching A Symptom Of Stress?

default
Posted on Tue, 22 Sep 2015
Question: I've been under quite a bit of stress lately. I was having muscle twitching in my insteps and my calves for 3 weeks, but it has tapered off over the last 3 or 4 days to practically nothing. It was more pronounce when I was relaxing or trying to sleep. Today my tongue started twitching and it burns. I looked it up on google and of course I'm a wreck thinking I have a terrible neurological disease. I remember having tongue twitching in the past, but I'm not sure when.

Brief Answer:
Tongue twitches occurs most commonly in anxiety

Detailed Answer:
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries

I can understand your concern. You were under stress and later developed symptoms like twitching in calves, insteps etc. These symptoms reduced by own and then tongue twitching started along with burning.

If we go by studies then most of individuals with tongue twitching have anxiety as main cause of symptoms. Though rare neurological possibilities are there but since your symptoms started after stress so most probable cause of your symptoms is anxiety.

You haven't mentioned any other neurological symptom which also strengthen the diagnosis of anxiety. In neurological diseases the tongue twitches occurs as fasciculations and other symptoms like weakness of limbs etc are also seen.

Twitching in tongue in anxiety related causes occurs in episodes while in any neurological illnesses is persisting. So don't remain worried, visit a psychiatrist if possible and take treatment of anxiety.

For these symptoms low doses benzodiazepines like Clonazepam or Lorazepam can help. These medicines will help to reduce the twitches and you will see improvement. Visit a psychiatrist for prescription.

Thanks, Hope this helps. Please don't hesitate to ask again for more doubts.

Take care
