Is It Safe To Give Serequel And Trazadone At The Same Time?
Question: What happens in dementia patients who are given serequel and trazadone at the same time?
The dosage of Seraquel will be 100mg at bed time and she has already been given 25mg today. The Trazadone dosage is 50mg at bedtime. My understanding is Serequel is really not good for dementia patients and I'm really worried about these two drugs in the patient at the same time.

Hi, Thanks for coming to HealthCareMagic. The choice of using serequel in this particular case is not very common.. but I know that it has been used effectively in patients with multi-infarct dementia (thats a kind of dementia that hits people due to multiple strokes).
Now about the combo of Serequel and Trazodone. There are no reported side effects when it comes to the brain itself. But both drugs can alter the rhythm of your heart a bit. If you notice palpitations or an irregular heart beat, i would report that to your primary right away.
Of course, if you don't like the serequel, just all your doc and ask them to change it, there are other drugs on the market and I am sure that they will be able to find a combo that works for you!

I am NOT the patient but I have been going to the doctor with the patient who is a close friend.
The patient's diagnosis is incomplete as they don't know if she has Alzheimers Disease or frontal lobe dementia. She has only recently been put on some medications to try and help her sleep at night and help with her anxiety and agitation.
The patient is in a locked care facility but they don't seem to be able to handle her sometimes difficult behaviors. She sometimes tries to take things from other patients and has been known to push and shove people when she gets angry. The nurse at the facility seems to handle everything by drugging the patient.
She was sent to a local hospital ER a couple of nights ago because of some bad behavior and came back from there with the prescription for 100mg Seraquel at night along with the 50mg Trazadone. The patient's neurologist told me that Seraquel should only be used in extreme circumstances like if the patient was a danger to herself or someone else.
So are you saying that Seraquel might cause some heart problems?
The patient is physically very healthy and fit. She is quite thin but strong, has always been athletic. 5 feet 7 inches, 122 pounds

Hi, So Serequel is is an anti-psychotic called quetiapine. It's known side effect is a lengthening of something called the QT interval, which is something you can detect of the patient gets and EKG. It usually doesn't amount to anything and the patient rarely notices. In a healthy young person such as this, i do not think it would do any harm. Given the history you are giving me, I do not believe it's a bad idea to give it to her on occasion. But I do not believe it would serve as a long term therapy.
I would instead suggest that you seek out her primary doctor and have the prescription changed to something like Xanax if at all possible. You may have already consulted a psychiatrist in her care. It would be a good idea to follow-up with them as well.
