Is It Possible To Remove Mesh Without Getting Another Hernia?

default
Posted on Tue, 5 May 2015
Question: I had a pelvic bone spur removed in XXXXXXX 2013, which resulted in a huge incisional hernia. I had repair surgery in which mesh was put in in October, 2013 and I am still in severe pain. Can the mesh be removed without getting another hernia? Thank you

Brief Answer:
Please give details- Mesh can not be removed without getting another hernia

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.

I am really sorry to know the pains you must be going through.
Mesh can not be removed without getting another hernia.

The mesh once put in becomes a part of the wall.
It is always a mesh (not a sheet) that is put in, because the spaces in between the threads act to allow the tissues to grow through the spaces so that the strength is gained. This way it becomes a part of the wall and gives a strength as it is not weakened to allow the recurrence.

Hence it is very difficult, in fact impossible to remove the mesh without giving inherent weakness to the area, increasing the possibility of having another hernia.

Secondly, I would like to know the details of the procedures done (if it is possible for your to attach the old reports, prescriptions, discharge summaries,
Actual photographs) as YYYY@YYYY
If you can please tell me more details about the pain:
Is it localized to one spot or is widespread ?
What is the type of pain - burning, cutting, throbbing, piercing or so ?
What are the medications used and which are most suitable?
Any alternative therapy tried ?

I hope this answer helps you to get a proper diagnosis, and get a proper further treatment. Please feel free to ask for more or if you need further clarifications or if you feel there is a gap of communication.
