Is Having Back Injury At The Site Of Spinal Fusion Surgery A Cause For Concern?

default
Posted on Tue, 14 Jul 2015
Question: I had a spinal fusion September of last year. I don't have insurance at the moment. Here's my question....... I fell pretty hard last night on the area of my surgery. I am hurting today really bad. Something feels weird in my back, at that location. Should I be concerned that they screw could have come loose or maybe the hardware is out of place?
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated .
Thank you, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Please apply following remedies for a week and watch

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.

1. Sorry to hear about your fall and hoping it does not hurt much. Without knowing the complete fusion details, it might be difficult to exactly comment on your problem. I have given a general suggestion below that works for most people who suffer a fall on their back.

2. A fall on the back usually makes the muscles go in to spasm and therefore the pain and discomfort. The muscle spasm starts usually after a day from the injury and persists for about 3 days. The hardware including screws is tightly put in place and less likely to get displaced. Please use home remedies for a week and if there no relief and is worsening of pain then there might be a need to get investigated.

3. Considering that you do not have insurance and the fall happened last night, I suggest you please try remedies like applying ointment having pain reliever and muscle relaxant gently over the hurting area. You might also apply heat or cold packs to get relief. Please avoid heavy physical activity for a week.

4. Should there be severe pain in the surgery area even after a week with no relief on applications of muscle relaxant and pain reliever ointement then please get a X ray done to know any displacement of the harware and loosening of a screw.

5. Please keep your insurance updated regularly.

Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.
