Is Harvesting Of Cartilage Cells Of The Knee An Experimental Treatment?

default
Posted on Tue, 23 Jun 2015
Question: Hi, this is a general enquiry. For knee injury, I'm aware there are doctors who would harvest the cartilage cells from the knee or stimulate the knee to regenerate its own cartilage. I'm aware that this is an expensive procedure.
1)Is this considered an experimental treatment?
2)Is this type of treatment better than the conventional treatment?
3)Would a person recover much faster through this type of treatment versus the conventional type of treatment?

Brief Answer:
Cartilage implantation is not experimental treatment.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

I have studied your case.

Cartilage implantation is not experimental treatment.
For patient with osteochondral defect with mild arthritis this is definitive treatment.

Newer modalities for cartilage injury include stage 3 autologous chondrocyte implantation [ACI] which helps in better treatment of cartilage destruction as before.

So ACI has excellent results in appropriate patients.

What is your idea of conventional treatment?

A person with mild arthritis with large single cartilage defect will recover much faster.
