Is A PTH Level Of 23 After Parathyroidectomy Surgery Normal?

default
Posted on Tue, 23 Aug 2016
Question: I had parathyroidectomy 2 weeks ago. A follow up blood test, 2 weeks after surgery, showed my calcium level at 9 and my pth at 70. My doctor says the pth was 23 after surgery and that he wants to wait for 2 months to see how my pth and calcium levels are then. Is this normal or should I be concern and proactive regarding the high pth?

Brief Answer:
Hello. This is actually the usual course after surgery

Detailed Answer:
Hello. The good news is that your calcium level didn't drop to the below normal range since the surgery.

The PTH level now isn't worrisome and it should in time drop some more. It's just a residual effect of your parathyroid adenoma.
