Posted on Fri, 1 Jul 2016
Question: I am a female experiencing hair loss. My dermatologist prescribed Clobetasol 0.05% topical. Does this cause more hair loss? Read that it possibly could and I don't need that right now.

Brief Answer:
Clobetasol is used if there is an underlying inflammatory scalp condition

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for writing to us

I an dr.kakkar(dermatologist). I have gone through your query and i have noted your concern.

You doctor must have given you a diagnosis for prescribing it? Or was it just given for hair fall?

Clobetasol propionate lotion is a topical steroid. If used on a long term it can lead to atrophy and hair loss however it is the drug of choice for certain inflammatory scalp conditions like psoriasis, lichen planus, scalp lupus etc which in turn are scarring conditions leading to hair loss.

Therefore clobetasol propionate is not the right medication for just simple hair fall. It is prescribed if there is an underlying inflammatory scalp condition which have the potential for inducing hair fall.

I was not diagnosed with any scalp condition and she said my scalp did not look like it was inflamed. However, I do have some itching from time to time. Still not sure if I should go ahead with this as I am concerned about more hair loss.
Should I not take the chance on using it? She said I had telogen effluvium

Brief Answer:
Diagnosis of telogen effluvium does not warrant topical steroid

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

If you were not diagnosed with any underlying scalp condition then you should not use it. Clobetasol propionate is not used for telogen effluvium.
