Is Cefixime Advisable For A 3 Month Old Infant?

default
Posted on Sat, 6 Aug 2016
Question: Hi Doctor.
My son is 3month and 26 days old. He is having frothy and liquidy motion since his birth. He also becomes cranky and cries a lot. Our doctor had prescribed Colicaid but still he keeps on crying. A couple of days we came to our native place which is a small town. Our son started crying a lot in the evening due to which we took him to a nearby padeatrician. He prescribed Cefolac(cefixime oral suspension) and bifilac, colicaid . I read in some articles that Cefolac is not recommended for infants below 6months. Should we continue giving him the medicines prescribed as yesterday night I noticed that my son was hyperactive while it was his normal sleeping time.

Brief Answer:
Gastrocolic reflex - please do not worry about this

Detailed Answer:
Hi...Thank you for consulting in Health Care magic.

What your kid is having is not a diarrhea and is only a gastro-colic reflux. It is quite common for babies of this age group t pass small amount of diarrhea or loose stools soon after feeds.

This need not be treated as diarrhea and especially antibiotics (LIKE CEFIXIME) are not indicated.

When the baby takes milk , the stomach expands - then when it is contracting it sets off a wave form which moves down the intestines and when that wave reaches the lower down rectum, a small quantity of the stool is evacuated out. This is the basis for gastro-colic reflex. Do not worry.

Unless the kid's having low urine output or very dull or excessively sleepy or blood in motion or green bilious vomiting...you need not worry.

Hope my answer was helpful for you. I am happy to help any time. Further clarifications and consultations on Health care magic are welcome. If you do not have any clarifications, you can close the discussion and rate the answer. Wish your kid good health.

Thank you doctor for the reply.

And what about the pain doctor. Is it normal too. Generally he calms down after passing motion. Only when he tries to pass motion he cries.

Brief Answer:
It's not pain...it's only a feeling of defaecating

Detailed Answer:
Hi... greetings from XXXXXXX

This is not pain. Older kids know the sensation of stools coming. But such an young baby doesn't recognize it as the feeling of defaecating. The only medium of expression at this age is moaning and crying.

This is the reason why the baby is appearing as struggling to pass motion. Infact there will not be any pain.

Please be rest assured.
