Is CRP Value Of 2mg/dl A Cause For Concern?

default
Posted on Wed, 7 Oct 2015
Question: Hello doctor

My CRP result has come back 2mg/dl when the reference range the surgery has said is 1mg/dl.

The doctor hasn't commented at the result it's nearly been a week and I am anxious and just making my own assumptions. Is this a abnormal result? What does this mean? Is there a infection in my body? I am scared how can I reduce this in the normal range?

Anything to worry about?

Kind regards
doctor

Brief Answer:
There is no need to be worried.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

CRP is a protein circulating in the bloodstream. In some situations this protein is secreted in increased amount as a response to some factors. It may be an infection indeed. But stress, injury, allergy, burn can also cause its elevation. That is why it is called non-specific protein.
It means that increased CRP level does not tell where is the infection and if it is an infection or something else.

In case of serious infection CRP reaches 200-300 mg/dl. 2 mg/dl is almost normal result and you can ignore it. And of course no need to be worried.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.

Thank you sir

What would 2mg/dl be in mg/ml as I know that test could go up to 10.

I am trying to think what the problem may be? I do have wisdom tooth growing can this be the problem?

Also how far am i from normal levels? And how can I get it lower? It may even be rounded down in the test.

My main concern is how long am I from normal levels as I don't understand the scientific units thanks

Brief Answer:
Your result is almost in refferential ranges.

Detailed Answer:
2 mg/dl is equal 0,02 mg/ml.
Normal level depends of the laboratory (every lab has its own referential ranges). Some labs has the normal level from 0-5 mg/dl, others say less than 1 mg/dl.

Yours seems to be 1 mg/dl. Please imagine that you could start worry if the result were let say 40 mg/dl or higher. Now compare it to yours result which is 2 mg/dl. This is really not much.

Ingrowing tooth, stress, anxiety, lack of sleeping, bad diet, cold can all be the reason of elevated CRP. But yours is not elevated. Is just above the norm.
