Is Brovan The Same As Budesonide?

default
Posted on Mon, 3 Oct 2016
Question: my elderly uncle has been given Rx for Brovan per nebulizer BID, Budesonide per nebulizer BID and Ipratropium Bromide 0.02% qid per nedbulizer.
He has COPD and emphysema, ? asthma, is on 2 L of O2 24/7. Is not Brovan and Budesonide not doing the same thing? And since they cannot be combined he will be doing 8 breathing treatments a day. They have nothing in writing from their physician that gives directions just went and picked up these. I am a retired nurse and am really questioning the amount of medications he will be taking when using these. Any comment would be most helpful.

Brief Answer:
different family of drugs, different action, often combined but need clarif

Detailed Answer:
HI,thanks for using healthcare magic

Budesonide is a type of steroid and it is normally used to help reduce the inflammation in the chest.
Brovana is the trade name for the drug arformoterol which is in long acting beta agonist family of meds and this is used to help open the airways, it does not reduce inflammation. As you would know , it does not have an anti inflammatory effect.

You may need to speak to his doctor to see if they can be combined. When patients are nebulized for acute asthma attacks they can be given meds in combination eg a short acting beta agonist is often given along with the ipratropium with one dose of the budesonide, but his doctor should clarify if they want him to do this.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
