I Woke Up Today With A Very Stiff Neck .

default
Posted on Wed, 17 Jul 2019
Question: I woke up today with a very stiff neck. So I scheduled a chiropractor visit. My neck is still very stiff. And over the course of the day have developed a fever and nasal congestion. I thought it was odd they both happened the same day. So I looked it up and these symptoms appear consistent with meningitis. So I wanted to know if I should seek medical attention.

Brief Answer:
acute bacterial or viral infection. visit your family doc recommended.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to Ask A Doctor services.
I have read your query and here is my advise.

* As per my clinical experience, certain bacterial and viral infections of the upper
respiratory tract do present with neck muscle spasm and irritation responsible for stiff
neck even in absence of meningitis.
As there is fever and nasal congestion, a visit to your family doc for primary evaluation
is mandatory rather than chiropractor visit.

* In this instance , I recommend systemic decongestant, muscle relaxant and if
necessary antibiotics for infection control.

* At present , you can take tablet paracetamol for primary relief and inhalation of vapors
of boiled water with blanket over head and deep breathing will help a lot till visit to
doc.

Wish you best recovery.
Do feel free to contact further regarding the same.

Regards.
