Question: I severely broke my humerus and shoulder (fall) while in alcohol detox center 1 year ago. now been diagnosed with hip AVN (need replacement) and was told it was due to alcoholism NOT lack of blood supply from my arm injury. I've read that can be a result. Can it be affirmed what the cause was?

Avascular necrosis of hip can happen due fracture of neck of femur. A small fracture even if it is displaced is not likely to cause the necrosis.
This is likely to be due to lack of blood supply to the head of the femur due to alcoholism. This is not related to the fracture of humerus that you had earlier.

Thank you for your answer. 1 question more if I may, when I broke my humerus and greater tuberosity I could not have surgery because it "splintered" and they worried surgery might displace bone fragments and cause infection. That makes AVN hip surgery sound very dangerous because of the "crumbling bones". How dangerous is it?

when I brke my humerus (minimally displaced) and my greater tuberosity it was caused by a fall IN a hospital, they took e-rays and moved me to a room in the acute care unit. They couldn't operate due to splintering, but did not give me even a sling for over a day - leaving my arm and shoulder flopping all around. when I received the sling after over 1 day of intense pain they kept me in the hospital for 6 days, not allowed to see my x-rays, and gave me a "shoulder brace" on day six and "fitted" me with a shoulder brace that made the pain unbearable. What should the normal protocol for this injury considering I was already in the hospital when t happened? Thanks for you reply
