I Have Had Red And Inflammed Tonsils For 21 Days
Question: I have had red and inflammed tonsils for 21 days now. I went to the urgent care and was given amox, no help, then azithromycin and that did not help, and then augmentin and steroids and that basically did nothing either. i strongly speculate that i have an abscess formed behind my tonsil as that has happened to me in the past. a doctor i consulted yesterday told me to stop taking antibiotics and seek help from an ENT asap. I am not sure if they will be open when i try to schedule an appt tomorrow. I am afraid to to to the emergency room in light of the current climate of coronavirus diagnosed in my area. what should i do?

The symptoms and signs you have mentioned suggestive of chronic tonsillitis. Abscess is unlikely because if there is an abscess you will have high grade fever and swollen and painful neck nodes.
As of now no need to take antibiotics. Do warm saline gargles and take over the counter available analgesics like paracetamol for symptomatic relief.
If there is recurrent attacks, tonsillectomy will be the treatment of choice. You can consult an ENT specialist and he will direct you accordingly. As you are asymptomatic it is not an emergency and you can wait for few more days until the situation improves.
