Posted on Wed, 24 Oct 2018
Question: I have a fever blister on my upper outside lip. it has been there well over 3weeks. problem was. after I noticed it. I then couple days latter. cut it with a razor. no on purpose. it just heart. never bleed. just hurts when you press on it. . the blister has not broken. seems to remain same size. also the inside looks kind of Yellow. it does hurt when pressed on. I don't believe that I have to sick or had fever. I am nearly 70 years old. no messing around with anyone. only limited contact with other people. because it shows no signs of opening or draining. should I try and pop it open? hate to do that cause it hurts. please advise

I can understand your concern...

Well, could you kindly upload/attach a picture of the blister, so that I can take a close look at it? You can simply upload/attach it to the Reports section of this webpage or even email the picture to YYYY@YYYY by keeping the Subject as ATTN: DrArnab, and I'll receive it.

As per your description, it's possible the blister got infected and now the infected materials forming an abscess.

The problem with popping, in that case, would be there's a chance of sudden spillage of infection to the surrounding area. The upper outer lip is a heavily vascular area and directly connected to the deep tissues as well as the brain. So, I wouldn't recommend unsupervised popping in that scenario.

Since it's already been three weeks, it's still hurting, and the blister hasn't broken yet, could all mean that the infected material may have been solidified.

It's a good thing that there's no fever yet. However, antibiotic therapy seems to be needed in that scenario after a check-up (in my patients, I'd generally recommend a 7-10days course of Co-Amoxyclav i.e. Augmentin). It'll help reduce the swelling and if, at all necessary, it can be popped under a strict sterile condition under your doctor's monitoring later on.

Please discuss this with your doctor and proceed accordingly...
