Question: I had a cervical polyp removed on Tuesday. There was minimal bleeding the first 2 days and then on the third day came the onset of what seems to be a full blown period which wasn’t due for another 2 weeks. It has lasted 4 days and doesn’t appear to be lessening. Could this be related to the polyp removal?

Brief Answer:
Can be related to polyp removal.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing to us.
The bleeding that you are having and which is not decreasing is likely to be related to polyp removal. The periods are not usually disturbed by this.
This needs a direct examination by your gynecologist to see any abnormal areas of bleeding in the area. You can start with hemostatic agent like Pause-MF and iron supplements till then.
Please feel free to ask any further queries that you have.
Regards.

Let me give a little more detail. In August I had about 2 1/2 weeks of a brownish discharge following a regular period. I missed my normal period in September and got a period on the first day of October. I went for my yearly exam this second week of October which is when the polyp was removed and when what appears to be a second period in October came. So once again I’m not sure this second period is due to the polyp removal or another irregular period due to perimenopause or something along the lines of uterine cancer. I did find out recently that my maternal grandmother had uterine cancer. Thank you for your time.

Brief Answer:
Can be a hormonal abnormality also.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
The second period that you have can be due to perimenopausal hormonal disturbance or bleeding after removal of polyp. This is less likely to be related to any uterine cancer as you had your annual examination recently without any detectable abnormality.
You can try Pause-MF and see if it helps. Other wise hormonal pills may be needed after a proper examination to find the cause.
Hope this answer is helpful.
Any further queries are welcome.

What about the uterine cancer family history. Is there a hereditary component to uterine cancer?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Dr. Rakhi Tayal (8 hours later)
Brief Answer:
Cancer less likely.

Detailed Answer:
A hereditary component is present in all the cancers but since your annual examination recently was normal and only a polyp was found, the chances of cancer are very low. Histopathology report of polyp will help in ruling this out further.
