Question: I enjoy a few glasses of wine a couple of times a week but never drink to excess. Last week i had 3-4 glasses of red wine over a few hours and became very confused, disorientated, and had difficulty standing up. My family said i was behaving very strangely, and like i was very drunk.

i had drunk nowhere newr enough to be in the state i was and the whole thing felt quite frightening.

What explanation could there be for this?

thank you

Brief Answer:
Using alcohol may have caused it.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, welcome to Ask a doctor's service.
I read your query and here is my advice.
The symptoms you had are because of alcohol and nothing else to get worried .
You are not a usual drinker so your body isn't used to alcohol that's why you are having symptoms with just having. 3-4 glasses of wine .
Also I think the percentage of alcohol in that wine may have been greater than normal .
The only thing you can do is not to drink alcohol anymore

Hope I have answered the question.

Brief Answer:
Different drugs can increase alcohol effects.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear and thank you for asking again.
Of course drug interactions with alcohol can lead to these symptoms but you didn't mentioned of taking any drugs.
You can tell me what drugs were you taking , prescription drugs or over the counter drugs.
Sometimes combination with anti allergic ,anti flu, anti anxiety and depression, anti seizure drugs ect all these drugs can cause dizziness drowsiness loss of concentration and exagerated effects of alcohol.
Waiting for your follow up question.

Thank you. I take a herbal treatment for anxiety which includes St John%E2%80%99s Wort. i increased the dose slightly last week.

I also occasionally take Lorazepam which was presscribed for muscle spasm in my back and had taken it that day.

Could these be the cause?

Brief Answer:
Taking alcohol and lorazepam may have caused it.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome again.
I believe that the alcohol has interacted mainly with lorazepam and with herbal treatment also and that's why you had those effects.
Don't have alcohol again while on lorazepam.
