Question: I am recovering from pneumonia after given azithromycin for 5 days. i completed my course about 2 weeks ago, no more fever and better breathing. i still have a constant cough that has become dry or minimal mucus. my labs last week showed platelets high at 415,000 and sedentation rate as 39 and alt at 106. two weeks ago, my platelets were 315,000 and alt 141. should i be concerned with these numbers? the increased platelet count worries me.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX

Thanks for posting your query on HCM.

Good to know that you are recovering well from pneumonia. Your concern about dry cough is understood but try not be very anxious about it as cough takes longer to disappear. With any kind of infection, there is inflammation of whole respiratory tract as a result of which it become hypereactive and causes irritation in throat as well. This may result in cough with or without minimal expectoration. You may take an antihistaminic like levocetrizine or any cough suppressant having an antihistaminic in it. Gargles with lukewarm salt water may help or you may suck on cough lozenges for soothing effect in the throat.

Your platelet count is not exactly high. I will say its on the higher side of normal range. Drink plenty of water. I hope you are not a smoker as platelet count can be high in smokers.

Sedimentation rate is a nonspecific marker and can vary with different situations. It may have gone up when you were not well and now gradually coming down. It will settle down eventually.

Hope I have been able to answer your queries. Feel free to post again if you have any more querries.

Take care
