Question: I am a 32 year old female. I had a blood test as part of a physical. My ESR is 30mm/ hour and the c reactive protein 0.4 mg/dl. I don’t understand my results. Is my ESR high? I also had low vitamin D and trace leukocyte esterase in my urine. Is my ESR level concerning? Do I have an underlying illness? I am not having any symptoms. I sometimes experience one sided headaches. I also have been having pain below my right temple area only when I touch, otherwise I don’t notice it. I think this may be related to my jaw. I have been stuffy due to the weather. Please help

Brief Answer:
no need to worry

Detailed Answer:
Hi and welcome to Ask A doctor service.
First, these results are not concerning.
CRP is normal and ESR is just slightly elevated.
ESR may be higher as a result of any present or recent infection such as flu, respiratory infections or urinary infections, etc.
But if you don't have any symptoms, you should not be worried about these tests.

Leukocyte esterase may be a sign of beginning urinary infection but if you don't have symptoms such as burning pain during urination or fever, or blood in urine then no treatment is required. You may just do urinoculture at your family medicine doctor.

Your other symptoms are nonspecific and many women have it, these indicate cluster headache or facial neuralgia and can be treated with nonsteroid painkillers (e.g. Tylenol).

Wish you good health.
Regards

thank you for your timely response
i think my question may have cut off. the only symptom i have been having is a tender pain under my right temple. it only hurts when i touch that area otherwise no symptoms. i think the pain may be related to my jaw beacuse if i open my jaw and touch that spot it doesnt hurt. i do get the occasional headache. the dr mentioned temporal arteritis but i dont think thats what i am experiencing.

Brief Answer:
Possible temporal arteritis

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Yes, it may be temporal arteritis but you would have some other symptoms so I am not sure about this diagnosis. TMJ joint issues are also common but also inflamed vein or neuralgia at temporal area may be present. All these are treated with a analgetic and no other specific treatment is required at this point. If symptoms worsen, you should do MRI scan. Wish you good health. Regards

Brief Answer:
i dont think this is cocnerning

Detailed Answer:
ESR of 30 is just slightly elevated and I dont think that aditional tests are required at this point. YOu should wait and see if symptoms will worsen.
IF you have any doubts you can do imunologic tests to rule out some autoimmune diseases, but i dont think this is required.
