How To Wean Off Oxycodones While Suffering From Advanced Arthritis?

default
Posted on Tue, 24 Mar 2015
Question: I have very advanced arthritis OA and RA. I take a good number of hydrocodone/Tylenol 325 each day. Imy RX ran out and I had to wait week without. I still teach preschool and work every day. My question is without the meds my pain has been less than other times. I did however take a couple of oxycodones a day. But that was less than 5 of the other. Should i go back to my reg pain meds or stay with the oxy? I usually take the XXXXXXX at bedtime that is why I have them. I never took them in the day because they make me a little tired. I am trying so hard not to lean on the meds however I could not do what I do with out them. Thank You XXXXXXX

Well I have gone through your history. I am just confused if you have rheumatoid arthritis or just osteoarthritis. Cause the management for rheumatoid arthritis will differ. You have better medications available for it than osteoarthritis.

As for the pain management in osteoarthritis, it is always a matter of choice on which analgesics suit you the most. Oxycodone being an opiod, has a tendency to make you dependent on it. That is one drug I would ask you to minimize. Although safe for the kidneys and liver, it has a tendency to make one dependent on them.

For osteoarthritis some form of analgesic is always needed. Tyelonol or.paracetomol are the safest in that matter. But yes you should meet a physiotherapist as well and they can tell you some pain coping strategies. That usually help

The other new medication which we have recently started using is duloxetine. It is a pain modulator and known to have a good effect in long run

But I will conclude by saying try to minimize your pain killer usage.no matter how safe everyone has side effects in the long run.

Do let me know for more queries
