Posted on Tue, 7 Jul 2015
Question: Hello
My Husband has 2 cracked ribs & yesterday they seemed better but now he is suffering terrible cramp like symptoms around that area, whats happening?
My husband has also been diagnosed with Fibramyalgia & is always in pain. He takes a cocktail of pills that have limited effect. We live out in the bush so expert medical attention is hard to come by & our GP keeps saying we need to see a pain specialist but we can`t afford it. Its putting a huge strain on me as his wife because I can`t help him & most of the normal relations between us has stopped because he is always in pain. Any suguestions?

Hello
We are not sure when or how my husband hurt his ribs but he started suffering the pain 2 weeks ago, no injury showed up in the Xray but a second doctor said that's what had happened.
My husband is what I call a functioning alcoholic in as much as he can work with out drinking but as soon as he gets home he steadily drinks until he goes to bed. He cannot not drink & at weekends he will start drinking at 9.00am but very rarely does he get drunk.
As for pain relief, Panadine Forte as a rule with anti inflamitories. At the moment because of the ribs its Norspan 5ml
Oh & yes he is a smoker, about 40 a day

Brief Answer:
This pain will take at least one month to be completely relieved

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Ribs injury takes time to heal. His smoking is also not good for healing because it causes coughing and that leads to movement at frcture site. So I would suggest this for faster healing.
1.Avoid smoking.
2.Do not sleep on that side.
3.Avoid any jerky activity or travelling.
4.Hot water fomentation. Volini gel local application.
5. Pain killer such as tramadol or brufen can be taken if pain is very bad. For fibromyalgia tablet Gabapin NT should be taken at night time.
I hope these steps will take care of his fracture. Let me know if there is any other followup questions.
thanks
