One is to gradually taper off the amount one uses, before ultimately stopping completely. The second is to stop abruptly, use medicines to manage the withdrawal symptoms if any, and also use medicines to control the craving. The first method requires a lot of motivation and strong will power. The second method involves taking support from family and doctors, and so, is suitable for those people who genuinely want to quit but do not have a strong will power. There are some other factors that matter, like the amount and duration of intake, how severe the withdrawal symptoms have been in the past, and the general physical condition of the person.
