How Manage When Someone Gets A Seizure?

default
Posted on Thu, 16 Apr 2015
Question: My husband has had seizures before and is on anti-seizure medication. He hasn't had one in about a year and a half. I suspect he has had one tonight. He fell in the bedroom, didn't hurt himself, but he lost control of his bladder like before. the last time, we called 911 and and was taken to the hospital where lots of test diagnoised that he had many. He sort of talks to me but he is asleep on the floor, breathing normal and pulse seems okay. He doesn't seem to have strength to help himself up and i can't so is it okay to just let him sleep for a while? The neurologist that he goes to had told me if it happened again and watch him. If he was out 5 minutes to call 911.

Brief Answer:
You can wait for another few minutes.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for being on healthcaremagic.com.
I am Dr.Ajay Panwar,a neurologist,here to answer your query.

If I would have been your treating physician in this situation,I would have told you that It was likely a seizure. You can wait for another few minutes, say 10-15 minutes,to observe if his consciousness level is improving:

If the consciousness improves, first thing is to make him take his antiepileptic drug and then take him to your neurologist. You should discuss with your neurologist to have some modification in his anti-seizure medication,as Gabapentin in itself is not a good first line antiepileptic drug and he may continue to have recurrent seizures on it.Some other drug like Levetiracetam may be more effective.Gabapentin may be given as add-on.

If the consciousness does not improve, take him to the Emergency room as he will probably need an intravenous antiseizure medication because in that situation,he will have high chances of getting repeated seizures.

If possible, please get an Electroencephalogram(EEG) as early as possible,to know about the current electrical activity of the brain? Is it epileptogenic or not?
Magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) of Brain will also help in diagnosis.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have some follow-up questions,I shall be glad to answer else, please close the thread-rate it and write a review.Your rating will be of help to me.
