Brief Answer:
Streptomycin causes hearing loss which is permanent in few patients

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX XXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.

1. Streptomycin injection is a recommended medicine for treatment of tuberculosis.

2. Side effects of streptomycin includes hearing loss which might be of permanent nature, balance problems. This problem is more if there is kidney disease.

3. If your relative has experienced symptoms like ringing/roaring in the ears, headache, hearing loss, balance problems, unusual drowsiness, dizziness, vision changes, or numbness/tingling of the skin then he should stop taking the injection.

4. If he has not had hearing loss in 8 months then it is likely that he is lucky and will not have any side effects due to the medicine.

5. Continuation of streptomycin depends on the regimen he has been given. TB medicines are usually taken for a year.

Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Regards,
Dr.Vivek
