Brief Answer:
Vertical movement is highly unlikely over the gauze.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for posting your query.

Bacteria can travel but most of these travel when outside the body is horizontal movement rather than vertical movement.

Also the life span of bacteria is short to sustain a complete through and through travel into the gauze.

Also considering the rate of movement of bacteria which is like 2-50 micrometres , which may come to half to one inch per day. At this rate it is very unlikely to reach the wound surface even if only 2 gauze are applied .

With all these factors , the possibility of bacteria travelling downwards to reach the wound surface is very unlikely.

Hope this information is clear to you.
Any further discussion feel free to ask.

Brief Answer:
Possibility is there.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Yes the possibility is there . But don't forget its not only the gauze that prevents infection but the disinfectant applied on the wound , that prevents the wound infection.

But the possibility is there .
