Question: Hello Doctor-How will a cortisone shot affect the healing of a strained muscle in my lower back? Will it hinder, be neutral, or accelerate healing? I am now having TENS and laser therapy.

Please advise.

The cortisone shot will help in decreasing inflammation in the area. This will give you a symptomatic relief, decrease in pain and swelling. However it will not affect the process of healing. It might happen that since you will be symptom free after taking the shot you may overstress your injured muscle thus causing a further injury to an already injured muscle. Repeated cortisone shots can cause weakening of the muscle fibers and thus tearing of the fibers. So, it is recommended to take only 1-2 shots at 6 weeks interval for symptomatic relief only.
