default
Posted on Fri, 9 Dec 2016
Question: I have some kind if massive boil or abscess on the back of my thigh. It started small and pink and is now huge. The swelling stretches toa good 15cm across; the pink hard swollen centre is about 2 inches across, and the very centre is now black. I squeezed yesterday and blood and pus came out and then black blood. Now it's too painful to squeeze.

Brief Answer:
It is an abscess.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
I saw the pic.
It is an abscess.
Please do not squeeze.Pus may come through a small hole, but again it gets collected as the hole will gets closed.
I prefer to Incise the abscess under Short General anaesthesia and let out the pus completely.Usually,I give a liberal incision for the drainage of pus.I do regular cleaning and dressing.I prescribe oral Antibiotic like Linezolid 600mg and anti inflammatory tablet twice daily to my patients with similar complaints. I don't prefer to drain an abscess under local anaesthesia as it is very painful.
Please do not use Anti histamine cream.
Please consult a General surgeon, get examined clinically and proceed accordingly.
Hope I answered your query. If you have any questions, I will clarify further.
Wish you good health.
Regards

My husband asked a doctor who prescribed zinnat. He said he can cut and drain it and it is a quick easy procedure, but younsuggest full general anaesthetic?

Brief Answer:
It is painful without anaesthesia.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
It is very painful to cut without anaesthesia. Local anaesthesia will not work properly in these type of cases.
I prefer a Short general anaesthesia. If you are operated in the morning, you can be discharged the same day evening or the next day.
If you can tolerate the pain, you can proceed as adviced by your doctor.
Wish you speedy recovery.
