Question: Hi I’ve been experiencing upper abdomen pain and discomfort , was told it build up of gas and acid , I’ve also been experiencing a dry mouth and throat, in taking prescribed lonsoprozle also, could the dry mouth and throat be a symptom or a side effect of the medication ?

The dry mouth is probably not a side effect to lanzoprazol. I would like to know more about your abdominal pain, e.g. how often and when do you experience it, any association to intake of certain food, how long does the pain last, where is it located exactly? Any previous colonoscopy or ultrasound scans?

Last time it happened was a year also , I ate a lot of rice and had it but it would just settle itself but I had this since last Monday, I’ve had no scan or ultrasound

Hi I woke up Friday morning with a white tounge (thrush on tounge) I wiped it away now I have ting pink /red sores of the back of my tounge what is the cause of this? I also am experiencing a dry mouth and throat too

Could be fungal

Hi again Itzsannah,

What you describe sounds like two things: 1) a fungal infection of your mouth and/or your esophagus. This can be confirmed by a swab and anti-fungal medicine, e.g. mycostatin 100.000 IE four times a day for 14 days.
2) Gallstone disease. This is completely benign and it can be diagnosed on ultrasound. Have you tried NSAID for pain relief?

Can this be easily treated what can I do to treat this? Woke up with a white coat on tounge on Friday morning I washed it away, just have the small pink spots on back of tounge and a little white scaley on tounge, does this tend to give you a dry mouth? And a dry throat?

Hi again Itzsannah,

The fungal infection can easily be treated by mycostatin as described previously. I suspect that it is the dry mouth that has caused the fungal infection. Do you take other types of medicine besides lanzoprazol?

The "gas pain" in your upper abdomen is probably unrelated to the fungal infection. I advise you to get an ultrasound and if this is normal, an upper endoscopy (esophagogastroduodenoscopy, EGD).

Where can I buy mycostatine? Could this also happen because of poor oral hygiene?

You have to get a prescription for it. It is often caused by antibiotic use, but suboptimal oral hygiene may also play a role.
