Question: Hi, I was recently treated for a UTI with about 5 days of Bactrim. I felt a little bit better, but was still having some urgency and some pelvic pressure. Over the weekend I was out of town and I noticed some grey/brown vaginal discharge, and a fishy odor. I went to urgent care last night, and they did a urine culture, did a test for STIs and also a test for Bacterial vaginitis, and a yeast infection. So far all of the test have come back negative, and I am still waiting for them to culture my urine. They said that could take a few days. I haven’t had any new sexual partners, I’ve been married for 15 years, and I’m 99% sure my husband has also been monogamous. They prescribed a round of Flagel, and said to call them if this doesn’t clear it up. I’m feeling better today, but I still have some light grey discharge. I haven’t started the Flagel yet, they just called me back about 30 minutes ago. I’m just feeling a little bit worried about it, and was hoping you could set my mind to ease.

Thank you, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Bacterial vaginosis can be a possibility.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for the query.
Vaginal discharge with fishy smell is typical of bacterial vaginosis. STD is very unlikely.
False negative test can be seen and you can go for a vaginal swab to confirm the diagnosis.
You can safely start a short course of flagyl(metrogyl) empirically, it is very effective agains vaginal infections and is a safe drug also.
Drink plenty of water clean your genitals with antiseptic lotions.
Thanks
