Hi I Just Started The Contraceptive Pill, And Messed Up

default
Posted on Sun, 27 Oct 2019
Question: Hi I just started the contraceptive pill, and messed up the dates and had unprotected sex on the 6th day. My question is, if I take the morning after pill while continuing the contraceptive pill, when should I expect the second period? (I am aware that the first period should come within a week)

Brief Answer:
Most of the patients would have a period a week earlier than expected date

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to "Ask a Doctor" service,

I carefully read your query and understand your concern.

As a rule of thumb, when a patient takes the morning-after pill during the first part of the menstrual cycle (before the day of ovulation, as it has happened in your case) then it is very likely she will have her next period a week earlier than expected.
If the morning-after pill is taken after ovulation, very likely she will have her next period a week later than expected.

In your case:
- very likely you will have your next period a week earlier than expected
- you are also at risk for intermittent bleeding from now until you get your next period
- this information is general, there may be variations from patient to patient
- also, because you have been using the contraceptive pill and you have not been using it as you should, some variation from these general rules is expected.
- even though you may get intermittent bleeding, you should not worry (unless you bleed heavily for a week or more). The bleeding returns to its norm with the first menstrual period after taking the morning-after pill.
- please be reminded that you are not protected after the morning after pill. This pill does not have a long-lasting effect. You will need to use the oral contraception pill regularly and according to the instructions in the leaflet (start where you left), and also use condoms for at least a week.

I hope this answers your query.
I remain at your disposal for further medical assistance.
