Question: Hi Doctor,

I need an opinion regarding my cousin's report. He around 48 years and his blood platelets have gone down drastically in last 4 months. It was around 80000 4 months back but now it has come down to 50000 and even the dengue and malaria are negative. Need an opinion on the blood reports attached and next steps that's needed.

Detailed answer given.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, dear
I have gone through your question and report.
I can understand your concern.

Your total WBC count and platelets count both are low. There are many causes for this reduction.

Common causes are viral infection or vitamin B12 deficiency. Other cause are due to destruction of platelets but it looks less likely.

Please provide history and symptoms.

What are the symptoms like fever or other complains.

If he had any past history of low platelets or not.

So that I can help you further.

I will wait for your reply. Thanks for using health care magic.
Wish you a very good health.

Thanks doctor.

I checked with my cousin and he was suffering from fever from last 4 days but there is no history of viral infection or deficiency of B12.

Brief Answer:
If he has fever then its most likely to be viral infection.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, dear
If he has fever then most likely to be due to viral infection. Because reduction in wbc count and platelets count is very common in viral infection.

It is not necessary that dengue is positive. He may have other viral infection.

In my opinion he should go for ultrasound abdomen and SGPT test. These will give exact idea. Then take treatment accordingly.

Take plenty of fluid orally and repeat complete blood count after 2 days.
