Question: Hi Doctor,

I eat out most of the time or I eat in hostel. I try to take fruits once in a week atleast and vegetables only when I go home that is monthly once! I have a lot of gastric issues, like acidity while going to bed, gas, bloating and weight gain over 3 years. I have gained about 15 kgs in three years. I am not indulged in any physical activity. at time I try to but my work nature is such a way that it doesn't let me continue. can really a healthy person who was at home until college with weight of 60 kgs when left college can gain 15 kgs due to desk job and staying in hostel? I don't have thyroid also. I have checked about 3 times in 3 years. what could be the reason?

First of all thank you for your reply.

1. The issue of weight gain is slowly progressive over 3 years or noted particularly more
in last months ?- Yes, it is progressive. and i have seen weight loss (not in kgs though by looking at me in mirror or by hearing people say it!) in this course of time. So a friend mine asks me if i have any hormonal issue 'cos he say i look fatter at times and i look like i have lost weight at times. he asks why do u change so much?! I have no reply! i want you to answer this too! Am thinking atleast it will stop after some days but it have been increasing only so far. when i reached 70 i thought i will not gain more weight (naturally!) but now am 75!!!!!

2. Desk job means continuous sitting for how many hours ?- 9 hours everyday

3. Do you perform any exercise in possible free period or not ? - Yes i try to!

4. Does the diet in hostel include high calories, dairy fat ? - Its basically rice, daal, roti. so they are all high calorie food.

5. Any noticeable alteration in sleep or menstrual pattern recently ? all of a sudden i got very low flow literally 1/3rd of what i used to get. but from the next time its normal. this has happened recently 3 months ago. and there is no delay or early period. its comes in +/- 5 days from due. Sleep wise am fine. i get enough sleep. (8 hours avg.)



My request,
please suggest a diet plan suitable for a person living in hostel having microwave oven only to cook! also, please suggest me any test that i should take to make sure my hormones are fine! also please suggest me a workout plan.
is this due to any deficiency in my diet? then please suggest me tablet supplements.

Thanks for the details.

* The most likely issue is due to hormone imbalance with lack of physical exercises and
diet issues.

Kindly find my detailed answer below.

* Life style management

- You must make strategy to do regular walking either in early morning or before sleep
for 20 minutes a day.
- YOGA and simple stretching exercises at room of hostel for a combined period of
20 - 25 minutes.
- Avoid stress, anxiety ( major provoking agents for weight gain ).
- Intermittent change of posture from sitting is mandatory during work time also.

* Diet factors

- Actually requires balanced nutritious diet including all elements of protein,
carbohydrate, fat, vitamins, minerals but which is not possible at hostel.
- In a curtailed fashion, I can emphasize to go for regular chapati, vegetables, dal
organic fruits on daily basis.
- Addition of legumes, cereals, pulses help much for overall nutrition and health.
- Microwave products are not much advisable for long term health issues.
- Avoid excess ghee, butter, spices, junk foods, aerated drinks till possible.

* Dietary deficiency of vitamins do play some role, but addition of multi vitamin at this
point may provoke further weight gain which is not acceptable.

* In my opinion, no blood tests are recommended at present but at least a hemoglobin
level to be checked in laboratory at convenient time of yours.

* In a nut shell, you require root changes in your casual to figure out the best of your
health for today and always.
Remember, these points will give results over a period of time, but surely you will get
results ( which should be kept in chart formulation depicting weight of body measured
on same scale every 10 days ).
