Question: Hello! I’m actually posing this question for a friend of mine. Six days ago she saw a red spot appear on her forearm and I am attaching a few pictures of it. As of today the spot is still there, although it looks like it may have faded in color a bit. She has been putting hydrocortisone cream on it. Yesterday she noticed the exact same type of a spot appear on her hip area and the last picture I’m attaching is a picture of that one. As you’ll see it’s almost the exact same size and color as the one on her arm. She said she has not switched any detergents, soaps etc. However, she did say that she started taking a Hair, Skin and Nails supplement about two weeks ago. Can you please let me know if you have any idea what these spots may be? Her sister was diagnosed with leukemia about one and a half years ago, so of course I worried when I realized that leukemia can sometimes cause skin rashes. Thank you!

Hi Dr. Kakkar!!

So nice to hear from you and thank you for your response! Unfortunately those are e only images I have from her, but I’m attaching one more from a picture she took today of the spot on her arm. Unfortunately the additional image is blurry as well.

She indicated there was some slight itching on her arm lesion but I don’t believe the other lesion in her hip area itches. She has not had a CBC or any other bloodwork done, and I certainly don’t want to alarm her by bringing up the subject of leukemia....she suffers from health anxiety like myself and I don’t want her to be upset. I suppose I could try to prompt her to visit her doctor who may pick up on any concerns and order additional bloodwork.

Brief Answer:
Possibility of fungal infection

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thank you.
It seems like a fungal infection to me. Circular or annular looking patch plus the itching. I suggest you to ask her to try a topical antifungal e.g either ketoconazole cream or miconazole nitrate cream/ gel, twice daily for a few days. A leukemia would only be a consideration if her blood work suggests so. Take care.
