Question: Hello, I took a 6 day course of nothesterine to delay my period. However, my menstruation did not start after three days after finishing the course so I took a pregnancy test that came back positive. How likely are the birth defects usually associated with nothesterine?

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for sharing your health concern with us.

I have gone through your query and would like to offer some information.

Hormones consumed up to the first 4-5 weeks of pregnancy have not been shown to affect the embryo since the organ differentiation initiates at 6 weeks. Any hormone medication consumed at this stage is likely to cause defects. Abnormal position of the male genitals and virilization of the female fetus have been reported.

The earliest way to detect fetal defects is through a blood test for fetal DNA. This can be done in the first trimester and is easier.

In your case, the likelihood of anomalies is less if you are within 6 weeks of pregnancy. Please see your health care provider for proper evaluation.

Hope you find this information useful. Please feel free to contact for further clarifications. I will be happy to help.

regards,
Shanti.V.
